Firewall.cx: 15 Years’ Success – New Logo – New Identity – Same Mission

This December (2015) is a very special one. It signals 15 years of passion, education, learning, success and non-stop ‘routing’ of knowledge and technical expertise to the global IT community.

What began 15 years ago as a small pitiful website, with the sole purpose of simplifying complicated networking & security concepts and sharing them with students, administrators, network engineers and IT Managers, went on to become one of the most recognised and popular network security websites in the world.

Thanks to a truly dedicated and honest team, created mainly after our forums kicked in on the 24th of October 2001, Firewall.cx was able to rapidly expand and produce more high-quality content that attracted not only millions of new visitors but also global vendors.

Our material was all of a sudden used at colleges and universities, was referenced by thousands of engineers and sites around the world, then Cisco Systems referenced Firewall.cx resources in its official global CCNA Academy Program!

Today we look back and feel extremely proud of our accomplishment and, after all the recognition, positive feedback from millions and success stories from people who moved forward in their professional career thanks to Firewall.cx, we feel obligated to continue working hard to help this amazing IT community.

Readers who have been following Firewall.cx since the beginning will easily identify the colourful Firewall.cx logo that has been with us since the site first went online. While we’ve changed the site’s design & platform multiple times the logo has remained the same, a piece of our history to which users can relate.

Obviously times have changed since 2000 and we felt (along with many other members) that it was time to move forward and replace our logo with one that will better suit the current Firewall.cx design & community, but at the same time make a real statement about who we are and what our mission is.

So, without any further delay, we would like to present to our community the new Firewall.cx logo:

Explaining Our New Logo

Our new logo communicates what Firewall.cx and its community are all about. The new slogan precisely explains what we do: Route (verb) Information (knowledge) and Expertise to our audience of Network Professionals – that’s you. Of course, we still remain The No.1 Site for Networking Professionals :)

The icon on the left is a unique design that tells two stories:

It’s a router, similar to Cisco’s popular Visio router icons, symbolising the “routing” process of information & expertise mentioned in our slogan.

It symbolises four IT professionals: three represent our community (red) – that’s you, and the fourth (blue) is the Firewall.cx team. All four IT professionals are connected (via their right arm) and share information with each other (the arrows).

We hope our readers will embrace the new logo as much as we did and continue to use Firewall.cx as a trusted resource for IT Networking and Security topics.

On behalf of the Firewall.cx Team - Thank you for all your support. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Website History

This page was created so that the Firewall.cx community would be able to view the major changes made through out Firewall.cx's history. You'll be able to see what Firewall.cx looked liked when it went online for the very first time back in 2000, up to its latest major site-wide changes and complete redesign!

Please note that by clicking on the images, a larger image will load.

27th December 2000

The Firewall.cx website idea starts to take form ... but is only online for a few hours per day via a 56k dialup connection :)

1st January 2001

Still trying to find a suitable "look" for the site, even tried one of them "make a site in 5 min" websites, but it didn't quite look the way it was suppose to!

16th April 2001

The site finally gets its official layout and now looks somewhat decent. Hosted now on one of Chris's NetWare servers, connected to a 64K ISDN line, it was adequate for the amount of visitors it was receiving!

A few weeks down the track, the line was upgraded to a 128K ISDN and was generating 1,5 Gigs of traffic per month! Firewall.cx's potential was clear from the very start:)

30th October 2001

Firewall.cx's menu gets updated and some small modifications are done on the top section of the welcome page.

Around June 2001 the site moves from Australia to the US due to the large amount of traffic, which is around 3,3 Gigs a month. This relocation reduces down time and increases the download speeds for everyone!

10th September 2002

Firewall.cx stops using frames as the whole site is converted to PHP scripting language so users now get dynamically created pages.

This gives the site's layout greater flexibility and along with the code clean up, ensures faster loads. Also, the new PHP Poll is added giving us the ability to have high quality online polls!

15th June 2003

While the site gets a few small updates on its interface and graphics during the year, the 15th of September 2003 was the last day of Firewall.cx's old interface as we introduced the new and powerful web portal system.

15th September 2003

The first CMS portal introduced at Firewall.cx. Based on the popular PHPNuke CMS system, this portal helped Firewall.cx bring new services to its community and tightly integrate member accounts, forums and articles. Firewall.cx ran on this CMS for 8 years and earned almost 100 Million page hits during this period!

This page acknowledges the effort and the dedication of the support team behind Firewall.cx that have made it the successful site it is today. There's a brief description of the people behind the scenes and recognition of their labours.

Editorial Team

Chris Partsenidis - Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Jeremy graduated high school in 2003 and, soon after, enlisted in the United States Air Force. He's balanced his time over the last three years between maintaining enterprise networks at work and tinkering with his own projects at home. These include: his website (https://www.packetlife.net); an autonomous live CD; a full CMS written in PHP; and several other side projects.

Alan discovered Firewall.cx in early 2004 and has spent much time answering members’ questions on the forums and as a beta tester for our Cisco lab.

Having become hooked on electronics at an early age, Alan filled a mis-spent youth with a variety of projects including the construction of large PA systems, amateur radio transmitters, programmable stage lighting controllers and setting fire to the bedroom carpet (twice).

This led inevitably to an HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and four and a half years as a Transmitter Engineer with the BBC. From there he defected into Technical Authorship where he found himself explaining the intricacies of Ethernet, client-server applications and large network installations to a varied audience. Reasoning that if he could document it then he could do it, he switched careers again and landed a network engineering post at the UK's National Exhibition Centre. The rest, as they say, is history, and Alan currently works for a large multinational company supporting a complex national network.

Alan brings to Firewall.cx a wealth of practical experience and an engineering background that informs and illuminates across a variety of topics. In his spare time Alan enjoys hot and spicy food of all kinds, particularly Indian dishes, and has an insatiable appetite for Chris's olives. He is writing a series of novels, loves to listen to music and is an active member of his local church. One of these days he hopes to get round to doing his CCNA...

Initially, Wayne practised within the Microsoft arena but in the last 3 years he has extended to network security and network infrastructure. He says "I have recently begun working within the Security/Network arena and I am still enjoying the learning curve. The Security arena fascinates me and I really enjoy the new challenges this is bringing to my career."

Recently, Wayne completed successfully his CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) making him the only team member with this qualification!

He enjoys taking his motorbike out for runs, dining out (really likes Indian food), watching various TV series and, obviously, messing on his computer.

Nikita, joined the Firewall.cx Team in 2006 and is currently a student in Athens studying Political Science and History. However, despite his line of studies, Nikita's interest in computers arose in the mid nineties. Since then, his experience grew due to his envolvement in several community based projects on networking and security.

His knowledge of administration on Unix-like operating systems and related issues, as well as coding, is extensive and keeps growing. Like many, Nikita's knowledge has grown from experience rather than certifications, though this doesn't rule out the possibility of obtaining a degree in computer science.

Currently, Nikita works as a network administrator in an internet café, which aids in purchasing equipment for his expensive hobby and aims to conquer his CCNA certification in the near future!

John Watters (Rockape)
